AGUIRRE DAVILA, Eduardo et al. Parenting Practices and Adolescent Citizen Participation: relationship mediated by parental support for autonomy and life skills. Psicol. caribe [online]. 2024, vol.41, n.1, pp.1-.  Epub 10-Abr-2024. ISSN 0123-417X.

The general objective of the article is to establish the relationship between parenting practices and citizen participation in adolescents, mediated by parental support for autonomy and life skills. Previous research indicates that parental support for autonomy is related to the development of political behaviors, and that life skills may be predictors of civic participation. In Cundinamarca, studies have been carried out on citizen participation in youth, however, these works inquired about institutions that encouraged such participation but did not address parenting practices. A mixed study was approached, using structural equation modeling and in-depth interviews. A total of 298 parents and their adolescent children, residents of three municipalities in the department of Cundinamarca, participated in the study. The results show that there is a significant relationship between parenting practices (communication) and the promotion of life skills (assertive communication, critical thinking and empathy), with greater political participation of adolescents, especially in community advocacy actions. The above allows us to point out the relevance of family variables in the study of civic behaviors.
