The assessment of the public health impact of the different forms of violence in Colombia in its recent history requires an analytical approach to the methods, which have been proposed in the country to interpret its causes and processes. Proposals presented in the '90s decade are examined to establish their grasp. A variety of different points of view, pointing to structural, social and cultural factors, were found, each one with its strengths and weaknesses.
