CORREA-OROZCO, Adriana e URIBE-VELASQUEZ, Luis Fernando. BODY CONDITION SCORE AS TOOL TO PREDICT THE REPRODUCTIVE POTENTIAL OF BEEF COWS. Rev. Fac. Nac. Agron. Medellín [online]. 2010, vol.63, n.2, pp.5607-5619. ISSN 0304-2847.
The objective of this review is to describe the effect of body condition score (BCS) on reproductive performance and endocrine function of beef cows. Interval to first estrus and ovulation, interval from parturition to normal luteal activity and to conception are shorter for moderate body condition cows than thin cows. Size of the dominant follicle at the first estrus is larger and pregnancy rate is greater for moderate condition cows as compared with thin cows. In addition has been studied to effects of BCS on secretion of luteinizing hormone, estradiol, leptin, insulin and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I). The program for induction of ovulation can increase the pregnancy rate in beef cows in poor body condition. However, the effectiveness of the protocol for inducing estrus and ovulation is dependent on body condition. In conclusion, the BCS is a useful indicator of energy status and breeding potential, because of the effect on follicular dynamic, ovarian activity, endocrine function and pregnancy rate in beef cows.
