ROMERO-CASTANON, Salvador; ROMAN, Gabriela Villarreal; ESPINO-BARROS, OscarVillarreal e MOLINA-MARTINEZ, Arcángel. Defecation rate of Red brocket deer (Mazama temama) in captivity. Caldasia [online]. 2021, vol.43, n.1, pp.202-204. Epub 24-Mar-2021. ISSN 0366-5232. https://doi.org/10.15446/caldasia.v43n1.79954.
The red brocket deer (Mazama temama) is one of the most abundant and widely distributed cervids in Neotropical forests. A method for estimating population densities is by counting pellets, for which is necessary to know their fecal rate. To estimate such rate in this ungulate, defecation events were counted during four days, in three adult individuals: two females and one male; hosted in captivity in the Xcaret park, located in Quintana Roo state, Mexico. The average defecation rate obtained was 10 ± 3.33 (SD) pellet groups / individual / day. This data will allow estimations of the population density of this species in free living.
