PRIAS-VANEGAS, Hilda Evelia e MIRANDA-MELLADO, Clarybel. Experiences of Pregnant Teenagers in Prenatal Care. Aquichan [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.1, pp.93-105. ISSN 1657-5997.
Objective: Describe and interpret the experiences related to the thoughts and feelings teenagers go through upon learning they are pregnant. Method: The study involved a group of 22 teenagers at level I public institutions in the city of Sincelejo, Colombia. It was conducted in 2005 and featured a qualitative approach. The information was collected through personal interviews taped with the consent of the teenagers in question. Results: Teenage pregnancy causes feelings of unhappiness and discontent due to fear, sadness, pain, suffering, a sense of wrong-doing, embarrassment and deception, accompanied by thoughts associated with denial, evasion, doubt, remorse and the desire to abort, which do not appear when the teenager has the support of her boyfriend or her parents. Conclusion: Teenagers need support, understanding and help, since they are more sensitive, susceptible, ¡nsecure, and have low self-esteem. This situation demands the health team develop and demónstrate skill and ability with respect to humanistic aspects, personal approach, empathy, and humane and ¡ndividualized treatment in attending to pregnant teenagers.
