RIOS RAMIREZ, Alejandra  e  FUENTES VELEZ, Laura. Democracy, political control and accountability. The Greek precedent. Co-herencia [online]. 2018, vol.15, n.28, pp.87-109. ISSN 1794-5887.  https://doi.org/10.17230/co-herencia.15.28.4.

Accountability is a procedure implemented by an agent in order to control the performance of a delegate invested with temporary authority to make decisions. Recently, in the form of a control mechanism for political power, accountability has gained great importance among democracy studies and practices. However, this relationship is not exclusive to contemporary democracy, rather, it has a precedent in the first democratic form of government in Western history: Athenian democracy between V and IV centuries B.C. This paper addresses the nature and sense of accountability mechanisms deployed in that context.

Palavras-chave : Athens; direct democracy; political control; Accountability; citizenship..
