Thirty years ago, the western state model was the only viable political ideal in the international system, and the best instrument for good governance, national development and internal security After the end of the Cold War significant bankruptcies were perceived, while evident inability to sustain that model in a growing number of countries. If in national societies, stateweakness was the most dramatic consequence of the worsening internal tensions of civil conflict, as a result, in the international community it was a source of instability with an enormous capacity to infect the nearby region, which necessitated the involvement of international actors. This paper aims to make a presentation of the main concepts used to define the state degradation process, while analyzing the degree of foreign involvement in crisis management and conflict resolution.
