SALAZAR BAENA, VERÓNICA. Visual stories in Times of Crisis: Cultural Transfers and PoliticalAppropriations in the Festive Chronicles. Front. hist. [online]. 2021, vol.26, n.2, pp.116-139. Epub 01-Jul-2021. ISSN 2027-4688. https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.1401.
This article studies the cultural transfers and the political appropriation of visual culture in the territories of the Hispanic monarchy. For this purpose, the documentary sources emanating from the celebrations on the occasion of the birth of Prince Baltazar Carlos (1631) in Quito, an important urban center in the northern Andean region, and the celebration of the birth of Carlos II (1663) in Pamplona, located in the Northeast of the New Kingdom of Granada. Although these sources are textual and lack graphic representations, we consider that the main characteristic of these festive chronicles is that they are generators of visuality based on the textuality of the read image and the word seen, which is why they function as a visual story also known as Écfrasis. In this specific case, it is a visual story constructed by the encomenderos with the intention of claiming their role in a context of special conflict with the imperial authorities.
