Data from a Mexican sample regarding the neuropsychological mechanisms involved in young children's learning disabilities. rev.fac.med. [online]. 2014, vol.62, n.3, pp.1-24. Background. An analysis of the frequent reasons advanced for learning disabilities is a common and obligatory topic of attention concerning child neuropsychology. Objective. This study was aimed at characterising neuropsychological functioning in a sample of Mexican schoolchildren suffering learning disabilities. Materials and methods. The sample included sixty 7- to 12-year-old children having learning difficulties. They were second to sixth grade pupils attending regular primary school. Two qualitative neuropsychological assessment protocols (historical and cultural) were used and neuropsychological assessment was made from a perspective adapted from a neuropsychological school founded by AR Luria. Results. The results highlighted quantitative and qualitative differences regarding the children's performance on protocol tasks. Such differences suggested that specifics types of neuropsychological picture should be considered regarding learning difficulties. Conclusions. Three groups having specific difficulties were detected in the study: functional difficulties concerning regulation and control, regulation and control and sequential motor organisation difficulties and the two previous ones plus difficulties regarding complex spatial orientation.
