FURRIER, Max  e  VARGAS CUERVO, Germán. Structural Geomorphology, Morphotectonics, and Morphometrics of the Map sheet Cartagena 1:100.000 - Colombia. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2018, vol.27, n.1, pp.67-86. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v27n1.54929.

The article provides a new geomorphological characterization of the region of Cartagena de Indias (Map sheet 23 IGAC) based on the creation of a morphostructural, morphometric, and tectonic cartography. Regarding geomorphology, the topography is dominated by the presence of two structural rock belts; the Serranía de San Jacinto and the Serranía del Sinú. The first belt, located in the eastern part of the zone, is made up mainly of sedimentary rocks from the Paleocene San Cayetano Formation, whose peaks reach great heights. The Serranía del Sinú belt is located to the west of the San Jacinto belt, from which it is separated by the Villa Nueva - El Totumo fault. There we find the oldest geological formation of the area, dating back to the Oligocene-Miocene epochs. The less mountainous zones are made up of flatlands and gently sloping, undulated forms made up of unconsolidated alluvial and colluvial deposits from the Quaternary period. The interpretation of optical satellite and radar images and the use of digital terrain models, as well as field observations, analyses of topographic profiles, and geomorphological cartography, make it possible to conclude that Cenozoic tectonics is the most important factor in the configuration of the topography of the area, as evidenced by the morphometric configuration of the drainage network.
