MEJIA, Javier. Long term economic growth in Antioquia, Colombia: GDP estimates, 1800-1913. Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2015, vol.34, n.spe66, pp.507-577. ISSN 0121-4772. https://doi.org/10.15446/cuad.econ.v34n66.44418.
This paper provides the first detailed quantitative analysis of the economic activity of Antioquia for the 19th century and early 20th. From the existing data for the Colombian economy, one of the first series of regional GDP in Latin America for the period is reconstructed. We discovered that Antioquia, in the early 19th century, enjoyed a higher per capita income than the Colombian average. Moreover, we found periods of economic boom between 1800 and 1840, 1860 and 1880, and 1905 and 1913, the latter being more pronounced. Thus, this paper provides an answer to the long discussion about the economic takeoff of Antioquia.
