NUPIA, Oskar. The quarantine and post-quarantine period in Colombia: Economic concerns, social isolation, and government approval. Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2021, vol.40, n.spe85, pp.921-955. Epub 27-Set-2022. ISSN 0121-4772. https://doi.org/10.15446/cuad.econ.v40n85.92053.
Using information from Colombia, we analyse the individuals' economic and social concerns generated by COVID-19, compliance with social distancing measures, and approval of the Government during and after the quarantine. Personal economic concerns increased during the post quarantine period, while social concerns decreased. A high percentage of people report both concerns. Compliance with the quarantine increased, while approval of the Government declined. Using regression analysis, we estimate correlations between these variables and an individuals' socioeconomic characteristics. Women heads of households, individuals with dependents, and informal workers are more likely to report personal economic concerns. Social concerns are less likely among the youth and more likely among women and informed people. Compliance with the quarantine is less likely among young people and more likely among non-working informal workers. Approval of the government in less likely among the youth, people with an intermediate level of education and more likely among informed people. We discuss several public policy aspects.
