CABRAL, JÉSSIKA. The economy of sin. Occupations and businesses of those prosecuted by the Inquisition of Cartagena de Indias in the 17th century. Hist. Caribe [online]. 2022, vol.17, n.40, pp.17-42. Epub 25-Out-2022. ISSN 0122-8803. https://doi.org/10.15648/hc.40.2022.3199.
This article presents some of the aspects of the 17th century Cartagena economy, such as slave trade and smuggling, through the immigrants, slaves, freedmen and merchants' stories lives. We reconstructed and analyzed the links created in their social networks from information found in Relationships of Inquisitorial Causes, from 1610 to 1660. This was also cross-checked with tax records, specifically: alcabalas, customs, supplies and the fund of 18 Royal Treasury, found in the General Archive of the Nation in Bogota. In this way, it was possible to understand the occupations, strategies and businesses of the agents, as well as their participation in the Portuguese merchants' network accused of Judaism in Cartagena.
