MORALES P, Ruth; BACCA, Tito  e  SOTO G, Alberto. ESTABLISHMENT OF AFRICAN PARASITOIDS OF THE COFFEE BERY BORER IN THE NORTHERN COFFEE REGION IN THE DEPARTMENT OF NARIÑO. Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.2, pp.81-93. ISSN 0123-3068.

To control the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) during 1999 and 2000, parasitoids of African origin Prorops nasuta (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) and Cephalonomia stephanoderis (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) were released in coffee farms in the northern region in the department of Nariño in La Unión, Buesaco and San José de Albán municipalities. In order to evaluate the establishment of these parasitoids after 8 years of their release, the level of infestation of the coffee berry borer and the practice management of cultivation by farmers in each farm was estimated, as well as, the presence of released parasitoids and the percentage of parasitism. These evaluations were carried out during the main harvest of the year 2007. For the analysis of information, a multiple correspondence analysis and a descriptive analysis were performed. The P. nasuta parasitoid, was found in 80% of the farms evaluated with parasitism between 0.2 and 11.6%, in altitudinal range between 1101 to 1879 meters above sea level, demonstrating its establishment in the main coffee growing region of Nariño. The C. stephanoderis parasitoid was not found in any of the municipalities evaluated. In addition, wasp dispersal to the neighboring farms up to 2.4 km away was found. Among the factors which favored the establishment of P. nasuta in northern Nariño are high percentages of infestation of coffee berry borer and the use of shade in the coffee plantations.
