Methodology: Through a careful analysis of the data, shows the arguments of authors who have reviewed the autonomy and considerations on the use of assistive technology for people with disability. Conclusions and discussion: assistive technology as a resource allows people to be independent in performing some activities of daily living, but their use can have negative effects on their lives, by problems with the loss of privacy, exclusion and isolation, marginalization and stigmatization among others, which are negative effects on social integration processes of the person with disability. Shows the technological paternalism as a process of control over lives of individuals, generating decrease in autonomy that aims to generate in the rehabilitation of the patient.
