Introduction: Amid difficulties grades Nursing has established itself as a professional discipline. It has been argued that human care is the essence of nursing care this has always existed as a guarantee for the survival of the species. However, it is necessary to observe the evolution of care, to raise awareness of the meritorious achievements of the discipline to evaluate objectively its essence and to understand the origin of many of our behaviors, values and perceptions that are part of our being nurses. Materials and Methods: Reflection article, which takes up the literature of the history of care and the evolution of nursing in the twentieth century to make a guild invitation to continue its evolution. Results: The literature shows that many achievements have been made throughout histories, which have allowed consolidating nursing like a discipline of the highest level. Discussion: We maintain behaviors that are part of the legacy of the evolution of care and generate a negative impact on the satisfaction of the professional. Conclusions: There are several strategies that continue properly directing growth discipline, including: research, consumption of the same, the application of nursing theories and practice of evidence - based care.
