CALLE, Claudia Marcela; ANGEL, María Paulina; DUQUE, Andrés e GIRALDO, Astrid. Periodontal disease and its relation to cardiovascular disease. CES odontol. [online]. 2012, vol.25, n.1, pp.82-91. ISSN 0120-971X.
Abstract Periodontitis is a disease of chronic nature, where acute phase proteins such as C-reactive protein, Plasminogen Activator 1 and Fibrinogen are activated. For that reason there is a hypothesis which says that Periodontal Disease could develop systemic inflammation and therefore be an adjuntive risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The relationship between this two entities can be explain by the systemic inflamation, bacteremia or indirectly because they share common characteristics. The aim of this article is to review the current knowledge about Periodontitis as a risk factor for Cardiovascular Diseases, and its impact on inflamatory markers analysed from the perspective of the criteria proposed by Bradford Hill.
