CASTRILLO-ROMON, María A.; FERNANDEZ-MAROTO, Miguel e JIMENEZ-JIMENEZ, Marina. Towards the Urban Improvement of a Functionalist Neighbourhood: Debates and Instruments for Open Spaces. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2016, vol.26, n.1, pp.23-32. ISSN 0124-7913. https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v26n1.54626.
The different revisionist currents on functionalist urbanism interpret open public spaces between buildings, characteristic of the urban morphology of the Modern Movement, in contradictory ways. This paper starts from a review of the most confronted positions and defends the need to develop techniques and methods so that contemporary urban practice on this type of tissues can effectively overcome today's prevailing stereotypes. In this sense, this paper proposes the "dense ground plane" as a specific technique for the analysis of this type of urban fabric and its physical evolution. Its application to Huerta del Rey neighbourhood -Valladolid, Spain- shows both the invalidity of the "securitarian" argument, dominant today in public action on the functionalist neighbourhoods, and the critical behaviour of the inhabitants against some of the principles of the Athens Charter.
