OLIVEIRA, Yasmin Anefalos de e MACHADO, Denise B. Pinheiro. Social and spatial invisibility in metropolitan landfill. The case of Jardim Gramacho (RJ), Brazil. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2022, vol.32, n.1, pp.163-176. Epub 11-Jul-2022. ISSN 0124-7913. https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v32n1.87530.
This article portrays the social and spatial invisibility in the case of the Metropolitan Landfill of Jardim Gramacho (MLJG), located in Duque de Caxias (RJ), Brazil. Its objective is to relate the responsible agents for MLJG's social and spatial invisibility process. Specifically, it aims to analyze the effects of its operation on the territory. Based on empirical and documentary analysis, environmental injustices and 'urban negligence' were identified by public, private and real estate agents in the entire process of implementation, operation and closure of MLJG. Even with the international repercussion of this extreme case, it was observed that effective solutions to minimize aspects of social exclusion, poverty and contamination have not been implemented until today. Therefore, the contributions of this article demonstrate the omission of the responsible agents for the current situation of environmental degradation, precarity and unhealthy conditions, and warn about the need to develop effective plans for the appropriate reclamation of the area.
