ALFONSO BORRAEZ, Oswaldo  e  ALFONSO BORRAEZ, Bernardo. Closure of wounds and fistulas by the negative pressure method "Colombian type". rev. colomb. cir. [online]. 2009, vol.24, n.4, pp.236-243. ISSN 2011-7582.

The management of intestinal fistulas, both those resulting from dehiscense or leakage of anastomoses or those caused by inadequate management of laparostomies (open abdomen), constitute a difficult medical problem and require repeated operations for their exteriorization or organization, nutritional support, antibiotics, and other measures. Infection in surgical wounds or in wounds that are sequelae of laparostomies that could not achieve early closure are also entities demanding high costs and special management considerations. Since 1993 we have developed and applied a method of negative pressure assisted closure with good results. But even so, it still implies high costs and therefore, utilizing the negative pressure principle and with very simple and inexpensive elements, among them the vegetal scourer estropajo (vegetal sponge from the plant Luffa cylindrical), the authors have developed an original method that is yielding excellent results in the management of patients with these conditions.
