SALES DORNELLES, Soraia. Living and Rule in the Village of Indians Viana: Pombaline Directory in the Amazon (1757-1798). Front. hist. [online]. 2024, vol.29, n.1, pp.63-83. Epub 01-Jan-2024. ISSN 2027-4688. https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2575.
The village of Viana, previously called the village of Maracu, was founded in 1757 in the context of administrative changes by the Portuguese crown for the Amazon region in the 18th century, known as the Pombaline Directory. It was located in the interior of the Captaincy of Maranhão, part of the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão. Based on the transcription and analysis of Book of Notes n. 2 (1776-1791), available in the Archive of the Court of Justice of Maranhão (ATJMA), we propose a discussion about the way that the inhabitants of the village of Viana acted in the face of the Directory’s policy, focusing on two aspects: the identification of indigenous individuals in governance positions and the transactions of buying and selling houses involving indigenous people.
