GUTIERREZ PERAZA, Carlos Roberto. Challenging Relationships, Fleeting Desires. Women of African Origin and Magical Practices in the Port of Campeche, 1639. Front. hist. [online]. 2024, vol.29, n.1, pp.270-288. Epub 01-Jan-2024. ISSN 2027-4688. https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2479.
The article analyzes sorcery and its impact on women of African origin, a sector frequently denounced for engaging in these types of practices. Based on an inquisitorial complaint made against two mulatto women in the port of Campeche during the first half of the 17th century, this study investigates the daily life of these practices in society, which led to the involvement and linkage of various social sectors. Likewise, it explores how, for some mulatto women, this represented an effective means to obtain, albeit temporarily, certain advantages, such as fame, prestige, and even economic retribution.
