This article analyzes the itinerary of Melchor de Salazar, a Spanish conqueror who arrived in the Nuevo Reino de Granada in 1563 and rapidly climbed all the rungs of the colonial society. While working as a scribe in the city of Cartago, he held other position, a status that allowed him to acquire assets and properties in the north of the province of Popayán. Subsequently, he obtained a small encomienda, and, at the height of his career, he managed to be appointed governor of Chocó in 1594. Analyzing his administration helps understand the actions of his government and how it adapted to the challenges that the Crown of Castile faced in the lands of the Pacific. Likewise, following his individual trajectory offers an opportunity to understand the social and spatial mobility of the Spaniards in a border zone of the Hispanic monarchy.
