Abstract

RAMIREZ GARCIA, Antonia; GONZALEZ FERNANDEZ, Natalia  and  SEDENO VALDELLOS, Ana María. Media Literacy in the Elderly Population. Diagnosis of the Spanish Reality. Signo pensam. [online]. 2017, vol.36, n.70, pp.94-111. ISSN 0120-4823.  https://doi.org/10.11144/Javeriana.syp36-70.cmpm.

The media literacy in the Spanish old people is an issue rarely discussed in the academic studies, but of increasing interest. This work provides a review of recent studies on the old people and their relationship with the media. Furthermore, we define the concept of media and the objectives of this research: to describe competency levels of old people in a representative sample and to determine how sociodemographic variables are linked with levels of media literacy in this group of population. We conclude that participants are distributed equally among the three levels of media literacy. Some variables that are related to higher levels of competition are the highest level of education (master, PhD), marital status, incomes, gender and level of audiovisual training.

Keywords : elderly; media literacy; mass media; old people; active ageing.
