Human talent management enable organizations to improve employee performance. In this sense, it is essential to develop strategies, tools and elements to foster an effective competitiveness for the globalized world. This article aims to identify the needs in terms of human talent management by service-sector SMEs affiliated to the Colombian Association of Small and Medium Businesses (ACOPI, in Spanish) in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia, in order to design a human talent management (HTM) model that contributes to the improvement of internal processes and the achievement of organizational goals. This research followed a quantitative approach with a correlational-descriptive method. A total of 30 companies participated in this study. Results allowed to identify and describe the characteristics and needs of the studied SMEs regarding HTM, thus providing new insights for improving business performance and competitiveness. Based on this, the need of implementing a HTM model aimed at the management of the development and the valuation of organizations is observed.
