Abstract

HARVEY, Robert. "On the Good Use of 'Spaces Otherwise'". Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.1, pp.279-295. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v21n1.74879.

This essay is an attempt to bring out some ethical (and, thus political) applications that may be derived from the notion of heterotopia as it was outlined in Michel Foucault's 1967 lecture, "Of Spaces Otherwise". To do so, Harvey focuses on one paradigmatic example of a "space otherwise" - the cemetery - and considers how psychological and cultural functions of cemeteries are treated in works by Marguerite Duras, Marta Hillers (long anonymous), and Robert Antelme. The essay ends with a reflection on the deep meaning of the term "Ground Zero."

Keywords : heterotopia; spaces; the imagination; ethics; Michel Foucault; Marguerite Duras.
