FIGURELLI, Mónica Fernanda. “Prepare to Die”: Plantation, Ethics, and Memories of Aggression in Belem. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2024, vol.60, n.2, e2669. Epub 01-Mayo-2024. ISSN 0486-6525. https://doi.org/10.22380/2539472x.2669.
In this article, I explore memories of different types of aggression experienced on a former plantation in Northeast Brazil, homing in on the moralities that come into play in the reconstruction of this past. The article draws on anthropological fieldwork conducted on the lands that were once part of the property and, in particular, it considers the accounts of the plantation’s inhabitants. My informants express an ethic about the necessity of the deathsand other acts of aggression that occurred there. The ethics that come up in these reconstructions bring to view a normalized aggression that is fundamental to the plantation’s social dynamics. As the ethnography laid out in this article shall reveal, the murders, punishments, threats, and other acts of aggression cannot be separated from such dynamics. In fact, the use of force either by the owners or at their behest was not exceptional but part of the sociability on the plantation.
